TRACK TALK BY:TRACK ANNOUNCER JEREMY MACDONALD
2011-09-12 - There was a lot on the line for a handful of drivers at Oyster Bed Speedway on Sunday. It was the final points day of racing for three of the divisions and two of them were still for the taking.
In the Modified division Robbie MacEwen took over the points lead last weekend from defending points Champion Dylan Gosbee and held onto an eight point advantage. Brodie MacQuarrie also had an outside shot sitting twenty four points behind the leader. In the opening heat courtesy of a Darryl Ford and Matt Palmer accident Brodie MacQuarrie was able to grab a win with Robbie MacEwen a close second. In his opening heat Dylan Gosbee once again was struck by bad luck as had a tire going down that eventually forced him to the back of the pack. At the end of the heats MacEwen doubled his lead over Gosbee to sixteen points with MacQuarrie now trailing by twenty-two. In their semi-race MacQuarrie and MacEwen equaled their first race finish but Gosbee faired out better with a third. Once again MacEwen was able to add to his lead which now grew to eighteen points heading into the feature. Gosbee who lead the points lead slip away last weekend was now threatened to loose another position to MacQuarrie. In the feature Joel Hickox won for the second time in the afternoon with MacQuarrie finishing third, Gosbee fourth and MacEwen solidified his points championship with a sixth place finish. When all the points were tabulated both Gosbee and MAcQuarrie finished in a tie for second place. Only fourteen points separated the top three drivers.
In the Four Fun division Janet Axworthy has been on a mission in the second half of the season. Her driving efforts have her coming from outside the top ten in points to a shot at the Championship heading into the final weekend and tops in the division for wins. She took a forty-two point deficit last weekend and cut it down to two points heading into the last race date. Axworthy put the pressure on Randy Mactavish who held the lead in points since June grabbing a win in the opening race with MacTavish finishing third. This knocked MacTavish out of the lead for the championship. In their next race Axworthy bested MacTavish once again as the two finished fourth and fifth. Mactavish now found himself trailing by four points heading into the feature. Both drivers had to battle from near the back of the pack in the feature and when the checkered flag flew Axworthy finished ahead of MacTavish securing her Points Championship. Alex Sheehan took home the feature win which was his second of the day.
In the Outlaw division Matthew Ford took home a driving double with Tanner MacAusland winning the feature. Eldon Doucette took home the points Championship in a landslide victory. This will mark the second time in three years that title will belong to the Doucette family. Eldon’s son James Doucette won the title two years ago.

David Lambe Memorial Street Stock Race
2011-09-11 - Thirty Street Stock cars poured into Oyster Bed Speedway for the first annual David Lambe Memorial Piston Cup in search for the prestigious win and the prize money associated with the non points race. With almost half the starting field from out of province and some locals returning for the single day of racing the field swelled to a number of cars not seen at the track in many years. The field was split into three heats by drivers randomly drawing numbers for what heat they were in plus their starting position. Each heat would consist of fifteen laps and their finishing positions would in turn dictate the starting order for the fifty lap feature. Local track favorite Gerald MacQuarrie drove to victory in the opening heat edging out Greg Watts and Emmett Donanhue. In the second heat Jamie Vasallo drew the dreaded number ten starting finish. The Sydney Nova Scotia driver didn’t let this deter him as he drove from worst to first securing a front row start in the feature. Mark Leclair and Darren Mackinnon rounded out the top three. Ricky Myers went on to win the third heat followed by Tyler Gauthier and Francis Vassalo. When the feature kicked off pole-sitter Gerald MacQuarrie quickly relinquished the lead to Jamie Vasallo who took the lead to the first caution nine laps into the feature. On the restart Vasallo was able to power away from MacQuarrie and once again found himself pulling away from the field. More drivers including heat winner Ricky Myers and fellow Sydney driver Mike MacLeod would try to give Vasallo a run on numerous restarts but no one was able to equal him. Finally a restart with sixteen laps to go MacLeod was able to nail the restart and the two raced side-by side for more than seven laps. While the two leaders were battling Darren Mackinnon who had been toiling in fifth made a brilliant pass to get by two cars. With Ricky Myers on the high side in front of him and Gerald MacQuarrie on the low side in front of him, Mackinnon saw a small opening down low of him and he took it. Squeezing between the two cars and carrying momentum he was able to slip past them into third place. This would become a turning point in the race. As the two front runners continued to race each other side-by-side up front Vasallo came out of turn two loose and sent himself spinning into the infield ending his day of domination. Mike MacLeod drove the final four laps for the checkered flag with Mackinnon crossing in second. However during a post-race inspection by Oyster Bed Speedway Officials, MacLeod was caught with an engine infraction there for having to forfeit the win. This gave the victory to the Mackinnon team along with the Thousand dollar purse for first place. This will be the second time this season Mackinnon has enjoyed success at the Oyster Bed Speedway. The Charlottetown driver won his first ever Maritime Pro-Stock feature this season at the Speedway.
